Acknowledging The Battle and Keeping Watch

Gwen SmithBlog, Faith, Holy Spirit, Prayer, Trials 50 Comments

We need to be fully engaged and alert because our enemy is fierce. You don’t have to wear camo but as a follower of Christ you do need a battle plan. It begins with acknowledging that there is, in fact, a spiritual battle raging all around you, and it requires you to keep watch.

I was excited one evening because I actually had a fun dinner plan, which isn’t always the case. Some grilled chicken was left over from the night before, so I decided to bust out my griddle and whip up some yummy grilled-chicken quesadillas. I know: it’s a crazy-easy make, but for some reason, my kids think I’m a genius when quesadillas are on the menu. Go figure.

I grabbed a knife, a chopping board, and the leftover chicken from the fridge. Minutes later, the chicken was ready for its cheese and tortilla companions. While the griddle was heating up, I turned my attention to a few other family matters. I don’t even remember what those matters were—just normal, ordinary stuff.

When I turned back to the business of quesadilla making, an empty cutting board glared at me. I raised an eyebrow and asked my husband if he had moved my chicken.

“No, honey. I haven’t touched your chicken,” he replied with a twinkle in his eye.

Hmm. A chicken mystery. How odd.

I began to interview each of my children, “Did you take the chicken off the cutting board?”

“No, Mom. I didn’t touch the chicken,” they said one after another.

I wondered, If I didn’t move the chicken and my family didn’t move the chicken, then where is my chicken? I looked around the room once more just to be sure that I hadn’t simply placed the chicken somewhere else.

Then I saw it … a look of guilt.

A look that screamed and pleaded, Yes! I took your chicken, but please don’t be angry with me. It smelled so good, and … and … I’m a big dog. I need my nourishment. Was it wrong? Okay. I know it was wrong. Please forgive me. I did it. I ate your chicken. I’m sorry. I’d like to go to my crate now …

His hairy ears lowered as my eyes met his.

My brows furrowed.

“Rocky! You ate my chicken! Bad dog!” I lamented in frustration as I began to make a new chickenless dinner plan.

Rocky’s just a dog. He’s not out to get me, and he didn’t mean to mess up our dinner plans, but he did prey on our family meal that night. He came and took what wasn’t his because I had let down my guard. I wasn’t watching over my chicken.

As believers in Jesus Christ, you and I must guard our hearts and watch over our homes. The Bible warns Christians to keep watch. Beyond things seen, there are spiritual battles taking place around us continually. Allow me to state this again: If you are a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, then you have an enemy, and his name is Satan. If you live to listen to the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, then strap on your battle gear, girlfriend, because your enemy has a mission to destroy you.

Beware!

The Bible tells us time and again to be alert to the schemes of Satan. To keep watch. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Pet. 5:8–9).

Though we have an enemy who wants to mess with our emotions, our health, our marriages, our children, our relationships, our jobs, and our thoughts, we aren’t without help or hope. We have both. Through the Holy Spirit, we have access to God’s power and protection: “The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thes. 3:3).

I was caught off guard the night our dog Rocky took the chicken off the counter, and there have been times I’ve been caught off guard in the midst of spiritual battles as well. As Christian women, let’s remember to call on the Spirit of God to empower us to keep watch over our hearts, our minds, and our homes.

Dear Lord,
You are all-powerful and mighty to save. I praise you and delight in your plan for me to have abundant life through Jesus. Please cover me in Your Spirit today and equip me to fend off attacks from the enemy in your power and help.

In Jesus’ Name I pray,
Amen.

  1. Remember to put on the full Armor of God before you leave your house each day.
I remember a sermon well on these scriptures in Ephesians 6: 10-20
Imagine that the last piece of armor is the helmet of salvation, it is filled with the blood of Christ and as you place the helmet upon your head our Jesus’ blood flows over the rest of your armor sealing each opening, each spot void of armor. Hardening over the armor creating a shell that is not able to be penetrated by anything, anything. Kind of like the chocolate outer shell of a dipped cone. BUT! this is the shell of our Jesus’ blood. By his name alone the earth quakes, if it quakes by the mention of his name, it is utterly demolished by the sight, smell and evidence of his blood, and that blood now covers YOU! Nothing can stand against it, NOTHING!

  2. Satan is full bore on my family but I know who’s in control!

Fire at our house, insurance company and mortgage company issues, relocation issues for my kids that were renting the house, financial issues, issues with oldest (17 yr old) grandchild being disrespectful, spiteful and divisive, new grandbaby due this week, 2 stolen bikes…and the list goes on.

When it is darkest, look through the haziness and there is SONlight in the end!

  3. Don’t let Satan or anyone else steal your joy.

I have to remind myself of that when I fall into despair from the frustration of chronic pain and illness. The frustration makes me angry. I miss out on so much of life because I barely have the energy to do daily tasks and work a fulltime job. The sadness frustrates me. I battle that frustration and disappointment daily.

I thank the Lord before I get out of bed for this day…its beauty and light even when its storming outside. Sometimes it is what motivates me to pray. I may not be able to attend birthday parties or throw dinner parties right now but I will some day. I may not make it to work at a set time every day but I make it there to do what I can. When I’m well, I work twice as hard to connect with family and friends and to accomplish all God has for me in the mission of my organization.

I am grateful for the gifts of the spirit that protect me and keep me connected even from my bed. When the despair and frustration hit, I post to my close friends on Facebook and ask for their words of encouragement and for their prayers.

Find your joy and cling to it. Don’t let anyone or anything take it from you. God gave you joy. Don’t let others steal it.

  4. Rocky is so sweet. How can anyone look at that face and be mad. You should kiss that sweet face and apologize for reprimanding him.

And he’s got nice nails, too.

  5. I declare, in the name of Jesus, peace over my life and others who feel attacked by the enemy. I declare a stronger bond with my parents as we embark on this new journey. I rebuke satan from my home and my life. I pray that God removes all sickness from my body and yours. I dexlare financial stability on my life. I declare a prosperous life with my new husband. And i pray for Gwen and her family. May you repeat the blessings of your ministry to us my sister. In Jesus name. Amen

  6. Prayer for my marriage. My marriage is on the rock at the verge of divorce, broken connections leads to broken vows by infidelity n stubbornness of heart of my husband to come back to the Lord. My prayers for him is to recognise his sins and have courage to return in repentance. For the Lord to fill his heart with hope in rebuilding our reln and lead him back to honor our marriage.

  7. Eli, hooray for your decision! I know it is a hurtful decision because you love him, but you ARE a daughter of the King! You are beautiful and have great worth! God tells us so-you and me and everybody-so when you finally believe it, and give up an unhealthy relationship, let the Lord be your guide and focus! Because that’s what He desires! Jesus fulfills us more than anyone! He never disappoints! Man always disappoints.
I’m here to tell you that I was in the same situation; I knew my relationship w/my boyfriend was not healthy, so when I broke up w/him, I was very sad but also relieved. And I told the Lord, “From now on I’m concentrating on you! I don’t care about men, I just want to be close to You! And if You do decide to bring me a man, please make sure it’s the one You want for me-no one else will do”! And do you know, He did just that! I didn’t think I was ready but evidently He did😊 That was 22 years ago, and together we have been serving the Lord ever since! So many things fell into place when I met this man, I had to give God the credit! And the praise🙏👋 So stand firm, wait for the one God has for you, and serve God. He rewards us for seeking Himself. There’s no greater joy! Blessings!

  8. Good morning, ladies! My name is Joka and I am a Fijian woman living in Fiji (South Pacific). After skim reading all your posts, I just felt overwhelmed with the realization that there are so many hurting women out there and the issue I am struggling with seems so minor compared to many of yours.
I am married to an awesome godly man who is also an evangelist/pastor in our church and we have three children and are also raising a niece whose parents are separated. My main issue at the moment is the mental battles I have with discouragement when my expectations are not met. It seems that when I wake up in the morning, these discouraging feelings are just lurking at the back of my mind ready to attack me. I will be praying for you all and your needs. Our women’s group will be having a prayer night this Friday and I will be including you all in my prayer list. Blessed day all!!

  9. Hello my name is Eli and I live in Texas I have been in a storm for quite a while. I had been in a unhealthy relationship with an individual. I have prayed for him and just when I think that things can change or he is changing it always goes sour. I have recently had a bad situation with him and I just gave up altogether . I continue to pray for him. Its hard to deal with someone you love and they don’t treat you right. I have decided I will no longer let him manipulate me and let him go. I cant deny I have always had this hope but now I’m just letting go and trust that God will knows what is best. I pray for strength and guidance every day and that God will lead me to the way I should go and not run before me or to try to do things on my own strength .

  12. I am going through a very rough time in my life. My marriage is on the rocks and my husband is a non-believer who is emotionally abusive to both my daughters snd myself. I am even considrring divorce.

  13. I know Satan has a hold on my granddaughter, with the prayers of our church, I see her slowly changing, when I quit requesting prayers, things go backwards with her. Right now she is in need of a job, she had an interview and was really excited and expected to get it, however, by her posts I feel she did not get it (I am afraid to ask because if she didn’t and I call it will make her even more depressed that I know, please pray that I am wrong, and that God will be with her and supply her with the right job and save her. She needs everyone praying for her mental health, spiritual health and salvation. I know there is power in prayer.

  14. I am struggling so! I have two children whom I am terribly worried for! My son is 24 and is bipolar and refusing treatment. He has no steady work, is behind on child support, is battling with his son’s mother over visitation of his two year old son, and has now restarted his battle with heroin. I am so concerned for him, and want desperately to be supportive of him, but have found my heart starting to harden against his plight. I cannot battle alone for him when he does not seem to want to fight for himself. He talks of suicide, but how can I keep him safe when he is a grown man making all the wrong choices? He was baptized at the age of eight, but now constantly argues with me that God does not exist because no living God would cause him so much misery. I do not know how to get through to him!

My daughter is 12, and was baptized at the age of seven. However, she listens to her brother and doubts the existence of God. She attends a Christian Academy because public and homeschooling have proven impossible for a girl with depression and ADHD. She has made “friends” with people online that are homosexual. While I do not believe in being another person’s judge (because that is ultimately God’s to do), I do believe in the Bilble’s many teachings that it is wrong. I do not understand how a child as young as 12 can make a decision that she is homosexual. Yet, she insists that she is. She refuses to go to church because the church teaches what is in the Bible. I believe firmly that’s the Bible is God’s Word. I am struggling with her.

I pray constantly that God will guide me as a mother to do the right thing for my children (and grandson), and help guide them to do the right things, and live by God’s plan for their lives.

  15. Our family helped a child in Africa from childhood and now she is a 25 yr old adult who came in 2nd in a singing contest like “the voice” in Africa. My husband of 30 years went to Africa and met this women while I stayed back working at our businesses that were crazy busy. He called her his daughter and convinced me and my 2 young adult children she was family. After 5 years of him visiting her every year which I blindly trusted him because he was helping an orphanage and used this as the excuse, he brought her into our home and as he tried everything to get her into the country and finally got her a student visa. It became clear to me from the outset that His relationship with her wasn’t right. The affection and attention he showed her was off the charts. He acted out of character swearing at me, watching an x rated movie with her until I protested a few minutes into it. The more I questioned his relationship with her the more abusive he became with me. He fed her off his fork and I found messages on his phone that were ridiculously inappropriate and over the top affectionate. She sings Christian music and professes to be a Christian but is so self absorbed and with her actions dress code and the effect she has had on my family I am believing she is a false prophet. He kept telling me this ministry he wants to support her in is all for the kingdom and thus is my way of bringing people to Christ, My husband has turned my kids against me. My Son has said horrible things to because he believes she is his Sister and best friend and has moved him in his faith. Both my Husband and Son have been deceitful and made outright lies to protect this women from leaving our family They both have been mentally and somewhat physically abusive to me. I lasted 10 months under the constant lying, deceit and abusive mental games and finally had to move out. I now live on my own with barely any contact from my kids because he has poisoned their minds against me. Even my own daughter who was uncomfortable with this women is under some kind of demonic influence and has accepted her. They are saying that am ungodly and have turned this woman who is my daughter away. The evil one has woven such a convoluted mess. I could write a 300 page novel as everyday there was an event of injustice and hurt towards me. And this women is anything but Godly wearing shirts that say pervert, OMG I am Pregnant shirt, low cut tops, singing at the church with no bra on and she is 36 D. I have been in the care of Our Small church group who stand behind me and Jesus has led me to move out but the injustice is so great. My husband has threatened me over and over including he will crush me if I divorce him. Please pray for truth over our family, against all the abuse, idolatry, pride of my husband and Son with the Spirit of Religiousness and whatever else the evil one has set up as Strongholds. It has been like living in a horror movie.

  16. Prayers today for a new relationship I’m in. He is a man of God. Satan has been attacking my mind and thoughts. I have begun today verbally capturing these thoughts and giving them to God. Praying for protection of us individually and for our relationship.
    In Jesus name…

    1. I prayed for you, Tiffany. Please pray for me as I wait on the Lord to bring my future husband and I together. The enemy has used some carnal believers to attack me in this realm (manipulation of events, lies to try to make me think she is seeing my friend, (competition, jealousy, envy), wanting me to think they are together but they are not). It’s been a challenge to walk in love towards her, but I’ve been praying for her, myself, and our friend.

  17. Apparently both myself and my son (he’s 16 and lives 10 hours north) have become the target of witches. Please pray for curses to stop, and cover us with prayer

  18. Yes I have one of those chicken pubes as well and I have to be ever Vigilant when I leave food on the table that could be in his reach. One time he grabbed the scraps from a cutting board from a roasted pork and ate everything string and all. So we were on string watch to make sure that he expelled the string and I didn’t get caught in his stomach. So now I am ever watchful when I leave food around that my hungry beagle doesn’t decide to abscond with my dinner.

  19. First, you must pray for your husband. Ask God to give him a love for your children like God has. Then pray for your daughter that God will put people in her life that she will listen to. Then ask God to show you how to keep the love alive in your marriage. You are under a three fold attack, so you must be a warrior & a threat to Satan’s kingdom. Keep fighting & keep loving. You will prevail!

  20. My youngest daughter has always been a good child, no a perfect child, always desiring to please anyone she encounters. Recently she has changed, become withdrawn to the family and secretive, she has gotten herself into some legal trouble which is so unlike her. I know she is under attack!! This is creating Somme problems for me and my new husband because he is somewhat hard one her and my other children, he has never had children of his own so I don’t think he truly understands the unconditional love a parent has for their child. His attitude is creating some anger in my heart towards him because no matter what my children do they are my children and nothing they do will ever change my love for them. I ask God’s love and peace to penetrate my heart and his and ask that these trials bring this family closer together and not tear us apart because I know that is the desire of the evil one. I pray that the Lord would bind the hand of Satan and prevent him from doing any further harm to my baby and my relationship with my husband. In Jesus precious name i pray. Amen

  21. Please pray for my son Raven. He seems to be under attack of Satan continuously through his health, depression, job, issues with just trying to keep his car going, and his desire for a loving relationship with someone.
Satan continues to blind him and put up road blocks at every area of life.
I pray for Raven to be strong and have hope and to know in his heart and soul that God loves him even in all the situations that block his way.
I pray for his salvation in Jesus Christ.

  22. I enjoyed this morning devotion. We are in a battle yet greater he in us than he that is in the world. We have the victory over our enemy. The bible tells us no weapon that is formed it won’t prosper. I have been attacked in my own home on several occasions. Yet I think God for being right here. Thru the daily devotions it lets me know God sees and he has equipped us to see and be not ignorant to the enemies device. We have the victory. Pray much with me . God bless

  23. First off, I love my daily emails with your blog of the day. They make me think, laugh, live, rejoice and love.

A quick note about crating dogs: the crate is supposed to be their safe place. Don’t take my word for it. Ask a trainer or Google! It isn’t supposed to be used for punishment. Please know that I only mention to help and maybe mention something you didn’t know. I didn’t know that when I first started using the crate method! However, know I understand your pain. lol I have a 105 pound black German Shepherd who loves to share his hair on anything white. Lol (also, 2 large rescue huskies whose hair is…well let’s just say I pray a lot for patience).

    Everyone have a blessed day!!❤️

  24. My oldest daughter is going away to college. Struggling with the choice of going with her to move her in that day. Have been divorced and her dad has agreed to go. I have the responsibility of 3 children whom are in school and home schooled by me. The distance of the trip and physical as well as financial burden feel over bearing. Have made the choice not to go. Still struggling with this and my daughter who is going to college.

  25. Yesterday I came home after a rough day and discovered that my beloved lab had been laying on our guest room bed while looking out the window waiting for my return. Picture this: 94 pounds of black furry love waiting to see me and he didn’t care that I had put him in the kennel before for that particular behavior. You guessed it. I was furious and kenneled him. He knew he was in trouble and put on a pout and wouldn’t “speak” to me for awhile after I let him out. He reminds me so much of me. I get mad when God disciplines me for something He had disciplined me for before. But I come around and ask for forgiveness. My beloved Lab has been such an example to me in many ways. I’m so glad God allowed me to have my Quinn. Even if his black furry self has the penchant for waiting on the guestroom bed!

  26. I am in need of prayer, i just foled for divorce. My heart is heavy, it is not what either of us want but it is not healthy and I can not stay.
My son is moving to Seattle to try to find work on a fishing boat to pay off student loan. He does not know anyone, or have a job or a place to live. Prayers for protection and provision

  27. Father God, today I pray for each and everyone of us, your children, our families, and loved ones. Give us discernment, teach us to lean upon your love, be vigilant, and walk in your power, and authority to cast down every thought, imagination, form of wickedness, curse and evil thing that attempts to rise up against your word and promises for us in Jesus name amen, amen, and amen!

  28. I don’t usually leave comments nor ask for prayer. First I will say to VERONICA who I see encouraging all others, blessings to you. I have a young adult child of the autistic spectrum as he is now doing great. He will always be who he is and simple minded, I pray for your your daughter and strength one day at a time.
My life has had some difficult changes involving a car wreck that changed many things in my life. Daily things that involve staying on task, or being able to shopping for our family has became overwhelming due my sensory issues with sound and different lighting..
I suffered a brain injury but you won’t have a clue if you looked at me.
God has taught me how I truly was not empathic toward others. He has caused me to slow down listen and look at true value in life.
For those whom are hurting today I pray for the Lord’s hand of healing to be upon your heart. When you feel like…. you can’t do this any longer remember it’s okay because He truly has your back. Take time to rest and be mindful of your blessings.
Ask the Holy Sprirt to empower you because the enemy is here! BUT…. Greater is HE…. Our LORD JESUS CHRIST…. that is with in me ( and you…. If you know him… Than he who is in the world!

  29. Pray for my adult son (26years)who is allowing the pleasures of this world to rule his life. Help him to regain his focus and put his trust in Jesus. Sometimes, by conversations we have had I think God is massaging his heart but then someone calls and he is back running the streets. He is still living in my home, I have given him 6 months to get his act together and get an apartment. Pray that God would open the eyes of his heart and change the trajectory of his life. Pray that through it all that I’ll remain hooked in to Jesus and I will not let anything disturb my peace. Help me to grasp and understand the war that is waging all around me and I will not succumb to it. I get frazzle easily. In Jesus name.

  30. My youth ministry at IIGD Ourinhos, Brazil that the young people in the group grow fruitfully in God’s grace. My husband, Marcos, and my two kids, Faith and Peter where we will declare “We will serve the Lord”. Job stability at Wizard language school and Colegio Objetivo for physical needs and eliminating debt.

  31. Our family life, the situation is not a healthy one. My son and his family with 4 young children living in our garage that is not equipped to fo so. With no running water and becoming deplorable and even unhealthy for the children. When they moved in 3 years ago, it was only to be for 2 weeks. Now even with my son having a good job, they feel they can’t afford to move out. All tjis is causing a lot of stress on our marriage and our health. My husband is taking it very heard and I’m worried about his health since he suffers from PDSD and other physical issues. Yes the enemy is strong, but our Lord is bigger! I just pray for an answer sooner then later!

  32. I am in need of prayer when I open my mouth each day… ” Let the words of my mouth benefit those who listen. ” Oftentimes, I think I need to state my opinion, my needs, my every thought. The next day- or even hour- I realize I did not need to talk but to just listen! I am in need of prayer for how I should talk or just respond today to my boss, my co-workers and my husband. Prayer that God will work out the many details that are currently surrounding future endeavors. Thanks, ladies!!!

  33. My daughter Lisa is an active addict and I’ve tried numerous times to get her help but she continues to let the drugs run her life … I am raising her daughter Whois now 15 ..I was married to an addict as well but eventually had to end the marriage because he also would not let go of the drugs … the stress has taken a toll on my health but need prayers for strength , wisdom, and protection. 35. Hi Jennifer, I’m praying for you, that God gives you strength of spirit, peace, and comfort in knowing that you’re a great mom and teacher. God loves you!

  36. I’m going through a divorce and I have 2 young boys. My marriage was not healthy and I have felt “single” for quite some time. My faith has grown since my family dynamics have changed, which I’m thankful for, but I’m longing for a partner. I’m lonely at times. My desires sometimes come before my faith and I’m trying to stay on track.

  37. Prayers for my sister Ashley. She has been taken in by some very bad influences, and is making bad decisions in anger, turning her back on those who love her. I pray that she stays strong in the Lord, that he touches her heart and helps her to find who she is again. I pray that God protects her from the evil influences in her life, that he closes the wrong doors and open the right ones. I pray that he heals her and brings her back home. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  38. I just came up on this bud what a great opportunity. I constantly find myself full of anxiety, I am a single mom with 4 Kids, I am a teacher, and have such a busy busy schedule where I always think I have to get everything done, I don’t nearly make enough time for each of my kiddos, or for myself. I have an ex-husband that is constantly trying to throw a dabber into my side and to compete with me/the kids 🙁 I know we are not supposed to worry, we’re supposed to leave it all to God… But it gets so overwhelming at times.

  39. My daughter Kristin. She is going through a divorce for almost 3 years now after finding out of multiple affairs by her narcissistic husband. She has stood strong, but all the abuse and drama have taken its toll on her and her two daughters. Now that the divorce will be final soon, he suddenly files a emergency custody order. Crazy is all I can think , but then I remember the battle and the enemy who tries to steal, kill and destroy our peace and joy. Praying for strength and wisdom oh Lord! Lord Jesus come!

    1. I pray that Kristin will have custody of her children and that she will find the peace and joy that can only come from having the Holy Spirit dwelling in her heart.

  41. I am an interior designer by trade. I feel very comfortable picking out a sofa or designing some new cabinets. A few years back, God stirred my heart and the heart of my then 10 year old son to start a ministry where we unite youth athletes to raise funds for orphans, at risk children and those with cancer! Now many days, I feel inadequate and struggle to hear which direction to go. I feel Satan wants to keep me overwhelmed and confused and in a place of doubt. Honestly it is difficult but I take each day and remember the WHY of what we are doing and saturate my mind with devotionals and God’s word and keep moving forward!

    1. The Lord is your guide. In Jesus’ Name you will be decisive as the Holy Spirit guides you daily into the perfect will of God. Satan will not prevail over your life and especially your ministry. Amen.

    1. May the good Lord guide your marriage. May you both seek His will for your marriage and treat it as Jesus treats His bride the Church. Submit your marriage and will to God and allow Him to have His way. Dear Lord shut all doors and windows through which the devil may gain an entrance into this marriage. Let them rest in Your peace, love and joy. in Jesus’ Name. Amen
