GIVEAWAY: Garden of Truth

Hello and happy Friday! I’ve got a fun twist for you today.

As you know, I regularly invite other Christian authors and bloggers to be my guest here on the blog. They usually share a guest post with you, my beautiful community of friends, and then give you a fun chance to WIN a copy of whatever book or ministry resource they have brewing. TODAY I’ve invited back my sweet Jesus-loving friend and talented artist RUTH CHOU SIMONS… and you’re going to LOVE her new project!

You might remember that Ruth shared a book excerpt with us last fall from her NY Times Best Selling book, GraceLaced: Discovering Timeless Truths Through Seasons of the Heart. My blog wall was lit up with comments for a chance to win her inspirational artwork.

TODAY I want you to see her new follow up book, GARDEN OF TRUTH. But it’s not a read-it-cover-to-cover kind of book. It’s not a devotional… or even a fancy journal. It’s a compilation of artwork and Scripture. Simple thoughts. Deep grapplings. Holy echoes. Sacred arrows. All purposed to direct your heart toward the Most High and stir your soul in responsive worship.

So grab a fresh mug of coffee, breathe deep and savor these points of reflection from Ruth Chou Simon’s Garden of Truth. And, of course, we’re GIVING AWAY 3 copies of this lovely book, so be sure to LEAVE A COMMENT to enter!

It’s backward but true: What we need is not better strategy or greater drive.

What we need is a truer view of our own weakness and a coming to the end of ourselves. God calls the end of our try-in-our-own-strength the beginning of His stand-back-and-watch-Me.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 CORINTHIANS 12:9

When you look into the mirror and struggle to see worth, take God at His Word and act accordingly: You are a conduit of grace, a vessel of worship—redeemed to reflect the treasure of Christ in you.
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

It’s not wasted, friend—this trial, this suffering, this fire you’re going through. The Lord promises purpose in all of it, for the purifying of your faith and the praise of His name when you see His faithfulness through it.

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 PETER 1:6-7

Congratulations to our giveaway winners: Mary Head, Michelle and Sandi Manning!

Ruth is giving away THREE copies of her book!

That’s it! Once you leave a comment, your name will be entered into the random drawing. Be sure to tell your friends so they can sign up too. The drawing will take place on Monday, April 16th, so don’t delay! {Contest is limited to US readers only.}

Garden of Truthwhich released April 3, is a small collection of 58 verses and short thoughts Ruth penned to help us to begin preaching and applying the Word of God to ourselves. It is not a devotional, nor is it a substitute for meaningful study time in the Word. Rather, Garden of Truth is a giftable, portable, compact collection of reminders at your fingertip; it is meant to ignite your appetite for the feast of God’s Word.

Ruth Chou Simons is an artist, writer, entrepreneur, and speaker who shares her journey of how God’s grace intersects daily life through word and brush at GraceLaced.com – the popular blog, online shoppe, and Instagram community that welcomes thousands daily.
Ruth is an unlikely mom to six young boys and wife to Troy, with whom she leads GraceLaced’s small but mighty team. When not painting, writing, and casting vision for GraceLaced.com, Ruth is usually busy eating chips and salsa, sorting laundry, cooking for large crowds, not finishing her sentences, and discovering off-beaten paths in the wild with her guys. She is a devotee of pho, a recovering perfectionist, a converted fourwheeling enthusiast, and a believer in waiting upon her Redeemer through every season.
Her first book, GraceLaced: Discovering Timeless Truths Through Seasons of the Heart with Harvest House Publishers released on September 1, 2017 and her second book, Garden of Truth released April 3, 2018.

  1. Our spring is upon us here in Colorado. Iam looking forward to worki g in my small garden of flowers. Knowing this is time the time spent patiently working the dry and hard ground where you plant your seeds by faith. I relate to my heart as He works on my heart tge same. I pray to be pliable in the Master gardeners hands!

  4. Life has not been easy lately. People keep telling me that I’m “so strong” when in reality I am on the verge of coming undone. God continues to remind me that I can’t but He can.

  5. What a great inspiration for everyone to learn more about God .. I’m always ready and willing to learn more .. thank you .

  6. The truths are great and, uplifting and comforting. I have had my fair share (I think) of unwelcome situations, and looking at these, it makes going through them more bearable because I am now looking at the outcome rather than the process. Thank you.

  7. I just listened to a message on forgiveness and learned I had not forgiven my parents for terrible decisions or lack thereof, in putting us children in harms way growing up. I didn’t know I was still carrying around the stain of being petrified as a child while my parents had guns out on each other as a child. The inward decisions I’ve made within myself has left me marriage-less, childless and alone; however, not unhappy. I love myself and God but I would like to get married; I’m 57! Your message for the second time this morning focuses on me being honest with myself and forgiving those who I trusted to care for me. Thank you for sharing your story.

  8. Beautiful pictures and beautiful thoughts. I love the idea of a book of short inspirational words that can be opened in the middle of a busy day for a quick reminder of God’s love and presence.

  9. This part really hit me: “When you look into the mirror and struggle to see worth, take God at His Word and act accordingly: You are a conduit of grace, a vessel of worship—redeemed to reflect the treasure of Christ in you.” WOW! This has got to be an amazing book for sure. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Hi, Gwen,
Thank you for this. When I read the first entry, trying in our own strength, to God saying, Stand back at watch me, I knew this is not a book I want; it’s a book I need!
I will not go into depth the trials and tribulations I have been living through, nearly constant, since 2003. Except for those who know me and my circumstances, no one would believe it! My faith has definitely been tested! I have questioned God’s love for me. I eagerly await to watch what God will do!
I’m praying, and invite my brothers and sisters to pray with me.

  11. What a wonderful book! Especially for Mother’s Day which is right around the corner. Sometimes you need just a different approach to the word to make it more special. This is the book!

  12. I love gardening ….Love Ruth’s artwork and words from Him that visually hit the heart…and so personally to me in this growing season I am in… ” you are sowing and growing each day through the thoughts that inform your mind and direct your heart” 1Peter 1:6-7. . and as I am Hearing from Him in this storm I am in … fixing my mind on our Lord…so good for me to see and hear this am… flowers from the wintered earth.. such beauty He creates. Thankyou

  13. My beautiful friend once said to me during a rather difficult time in his life…”Nothing is EVER wasted”…..such truth, if we choose to see things the way God sees them….
Thank you Gwen for your posts…they are truly inspirational….

  14. Especially as women, we do not appreciate all the craftsmanship that God used when He created us. That thought alone would give us enough self-esteem (based not on our own viewpoint, but on Christ’s) to last us our lifetime. Yet, we struggle with those thoughts of unworth, usually because we take our eyes off Christ and look to the world for our sense of “being enough”. This book will help anyone who reads it to find value, love and peace about who we are.

  15. I love the reminder that “God sought [me] out.” The all knowing, all mighty, omnipotent, magnificent, majestic God, who is the creator of all things, looked or sought after me. I am that important to him! He loves me so much. Abba, Father is looked for “his own” child. This reminds me of my children when they were smaller and one hid in the rack of clothes in the store, and I was scared to death. I searched for them [twin boys] and called their names only to see them smile and pop out near me. “I am right here mom!” He, the God of the Universe, sought after me. Thank for this nugget of truth.

  16. These words have been a blessing to me this morning following the trials of the past week.
May God continue to use you to bless others. Thanks for having her on your blog Gwen.

  17. I am intrigued. The art is beautiful and made more beautiful by pairing it with God’s word to us. I would love to have a copy.

  18. I would love to win a copy of Garden Of Truth. I could really use some compact portable fingertip encouragement reminders to have right now. I had a really bad fall on 12-3-17 & didn’t get a proper diagnosis of my multiple injuries til 46 days later & I have been in a huge amount of chronic pain with my multiple Injuries on top of my body has been afflicted with multiple Chronic pain afflictions for the past 26 years. I can’t take pain meds as I’m MCS (multiple chemical sensitive) to prescription & OTC MEDS so I can’t take anything for the intense excruciating pain & I need a MRI to determine if I need surgery on my injured shoulder from my
fall. Crying out & clinging to Jesus is the only thing keeping me going & helping me endure these high levels of intense excruciating unbearable physical pain . I love these Scripture reminders! Sincerely, Vena Astemborski

  23. This books sounds great and worth a read! A lot of times our trials and things we are going through don’t have a purpose. We also need to know what God’s truths are for us.

  24. There’s one truth I have tucked into my heart – “When I am weak, then He is strong”. This truth has come through for me in my walk with Jesus. I love that you have taken the time and effort to put His truths together to remind us that He is the truth. It’s His truth that will set us free. Thank you and God bless you.

  26. What a beautiful collection of inspirational and powerful words! Would love to be able to share this with my clients who are in addiction treatment. Thank you.

  27. I hope many people hear about this book. In today’s world, it is so easy to lose hope, motivation, or confidence. With the use of cell phones taking up most of our attention, it can be difficult to focus on Him, and we instead focus on the world’s turmoil.

  28. I want to tell you how much I love your inspirational posts every day. I have struggled for some time with health issues and some other things. While I have been a Christian for many, many years, it’s always refreshing and helpful to get encouragement from fresh new eyes. God bless you!

  29. I am making the Garden of Truth mine (refocusing, resetting, and rehearsing truth to myself). Because His grace is sufficient for me, for His power is made perfect in my weakness!!! I am a conduit of grace, a vessel of worship, redeemed to reflect the treasure of Christ in me!!! I am sowing and growing each day through the thoughts that inform my mind and direct my heart!!! Amen.

  30. I wasn’t really planning on this but God led me right to it so here it goes. My Sweet Father Abundant blessed me with a portion of my testimony and I’d love to share it…. Thank You.

I was in the throes of the deepest, darkest, loneliest, scariest, most desolate place I could never imagine. Everything was the desert in me and around me and I let satan keep me there so long I had no hope, no true faith, I couldn’t see any love from anyone, including my Beloved Father, it had all dried up, there was nothing left at all. It says in the devotional that we have to sometimes come to the scariest place so that’s it’s more scary to stay where we are than to let Him move us into Him. That’s where I was, the death following my spiritual, emotional, heart and soul death, was literally death; I thought about it almost constantly. Then, He was able to move. He moved me into Him. I was finally able to quit clinging to the edge that was literally in every way drowning me and He made way for His Streams and Rivers to flow through my desert. Turn my ashes into truly undescribable beauty. I am finally FOREVER HIS. I cannot and will not imagine my life without Him. It’s just not possible. I’ve heard the words, oh He’ll never leave you, write His Word on your heart and you’ll always have Him, He’s always with you and many more things; but I’VE NEVER experienced that AMAZING, GORGEOUS, TRULY LIFE CHANGING beauty. He REALLY is with me, I feel Him every second and acknowledge Him every second. My prayers are FOREVER on my lips. He TRULY IS my Help, my Rescuer, my very Best Friend, my Constant, ALWAYS. I cannot wait to see His Face and fall to my face at His Feet and worship and praise His Beauty and Faithfulness. He says He will never loosen His grip on us and always pursue us….. And I know to my soul that He never did and THAT alone is the only reason I’m standing today. I’m standing on His Promises and His Word and I KNOW I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN! SATAN IS UNDER MY FEET AND THERE HE WILL STAY FOREVERMORE! MY LORD, MY GOD, MY AMAZING FATHER HAS TRULY OVERCOME MY WORLD AND THE WORLD AROUND ME!!!! He’s says get ready I’M ABOUT TO DO A NEW THING, NOW IT WILL SPRING FORTH!

  31. Thanks so much for letting me have this opportunity. It’s so great that she is doing this. I just love these little books. Anyone would be fine with me.

  32. Gwen,
Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of Ruth Chou Simon’s book “Garden of Truth”!! Beautiful artwork and scriptures. This would be a wonderful Mother’s Day Gift!!

  33. Looks to be a beautiful book with words of encouragement to touch our souls! I love the artwork and reminder that we were absolutely chosen and sought out by God as a reminder of our worth.

  34. Before my total knee replacement I asked friends to write quotes or Bible verses on cards for me. Each friend did somethings totally different. One dear friend wrote her favorite scriptures on pretty card stock paper and then decorated them with beautiful pictures. I still remember those inspiring scriptures, that was over ten years ago. I gave them to another friend during a challenging time. This beautiful book would be the perfect gift for a friend in the midst of a struggle or not struggling or Mother’s Day gift!!!

  35. Beautiful truths to your writing Rose. It’s truly a gift from GOD to share his beauty and his wonders works through your painting and the wonderful story GOD puts on your heart to write. Many blessings to you, keep sharing.

  36. I have always loved this quote by Aristotle: “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”

  37. I believe in this quote by Aristotle: “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” There is so many way that art “speaks” to us and can help see the truth and just release the stress that we endure on a daily basis!

  38. This is how I know God is real! In the middle of a crazy Friday at work, when my heart is heavy and burdened, He my Abba Father, reveals the perfect word. Just when I need it. Thank you for writing and sharing…. I will smile!

  39. The “Garden of Truth” is truly a garden of inspiration to encourage us as we walk along these mundane shores of life. What joy and peace it brings to hear that others struggle with the same type of issues in the garden of life. Sometimes the garden doesn’t produce edible food to sustain us when we have so many weeds growing around us. We get strength from the testimonies of others. May God continue to encourage and inspire your heart.

  40. Thank you for these nuggets! I absolutely love having somewhere I can flip to for a quick inspiration or Godly thought to get me through the day! I can’t wait to read the entire book!

  41. Thank you Ruth for taking the time to use your God given talent to inspire women to come to know & trust the Lord! May He continue to use you & Bless you Abundantly! Blessings
    Cindy, from Texas

  42. The picture and thought of my body being a temple of the Holy Spirit, of God residing within me, of the strong faith of Peter when he stepped out of the boat, of the countless miracles of Jesus, of the sacrifice made for me for forgiveness is awesome. I lost my husband and best friend to cancer last October very quickly. He desperately prayed for Gods grace and forgiveness and I know he with Jesus but I am sad and lonely. These three beautiful floral paintings and messages seem to be written just for me. Thank you.
I know , “he was not ours, he was not mine”, he was Gods.

  43. Thank you so much for introducing me to this amazing lady! I am trying to find peace and some sort of purpose in both his word, and my own creativity. It would be a blessing to receive a copy of this amazing book.

  44. So enjoyed reading the few pages of “Garden of Truth” ! I would be so thrilled to receive this book which would help me with inspiring & encouraging thoughts. Thank you for sharing Ruth Chou Simons with us!

  45. Right now in my life, the creativity of art and simplicity of words is what is feeding my soul. This book looks to be right up my alley. As I struggle with being a good daughter to ailing, severe memory-impaired parents and being a good, fun Gram to my 3 granddaughters I’m looking for those beautiful simple ways to focus on God

  46. As a just retired Nurse Director it was laid on my heart that each of us our truly sought out by our Heavenly Father. Each unique DNA of every person so carefully formed by our Loving Father. This was my story of comfort to our patients in a sometimes painful, scarred world that needed the patient healing that only our Father could give. This Love for each person was so simplistic to tell and yet so powerful. I look forward to these simple soul pleasing writings to share.

  47. Love her writing, so inspirational! As a teacher I’m always looking for new and fresh ideas. Would enjoy this book so much.
    Cathy

  48. Wow what beautiful and encouraging book… Just with the few I read it fill my heart with joy and thanksgiving….

    God Bless you

  49. This reflection really spoke to me as I faced some trials in my life and I am going to pass it on to my pregnant friend who is facing a difficult relationship issue right now with her fiance to encourage her to keep trying to work it out.
“It’s not wasted, friend—this trial, this suffering, this fire you’re going through.

  50. Oh my how I think I NEED this book. Facing trial after trial this year. His Grace is sufficient has been my motto, but some days I have to remind myself that more than a few times a day!

  51. I absolutely love books like this & would love to place it on my coffee table in the living room for all to see & read!

  52. Wow, I really enjoyed those few pages you shared. I belong to a couple of pray groups and bible study, but I enjoy the simplicity and beauty that offer in this book. In just a few words and a simple picture transform my thoughts and mind. Thank you!

  53. The artwork is so beautiful and coordinates with the inspirational words. Looks like a great book of uplifting words to remind us of how Great our God is and how He works in our lives.

  54. I struggle with low self-esteem…. I am finding that with reading these little columns I am a valuable person. I just purchased “Enough” and am anxious to start reading it.

  55. I love the idea of this book. The pictures are beautiful and the verses are uplifting. I hope my name is picked. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  56. This is so encouraging. As Christians, though we know we are saved by Grace through Faith, we still strive to “prove” to ourselves that we are worthy of the love of God through our own works. We are happy and feel “holy” when we do what we know we ought to do and we are “down and condemned” when we do what we know we are not supposed to do…God loves us all the same despite it all…we just have to keep seeking him and know it’s all possible through his Grace…

  57. “When you look into the mirror and struggle to see worth, take God at His Word and act accordingly: You are a conduit of grace, a vessel of worship—redeemed to reflect the treasure of Christ in you.” This is such a great advice. I always struggle to see my own worth, as well as the fact that I am beautiful. Sounds like an excellent book. Would love to win it! God bless you!

  58. As an artsy person, one who likes to create with my hands, this really resonates with me. Sweet, beautiful reminders of who we are in Christ. What a pleasure this would be to win!

  60. My prayer has always been BLOOM where planted. 🌷 I would love a copy of this book to share with my many amazing friends, especially this season! As I wrap up our bible study with you, Gwen. I’m eager to keep my spirit fed. As I begin to dig into my own garden and plant new seeds, both literally and soulfully.

  61. What a beautiful way to spread God’s truths! This is a serene way to prepare our hearts to interact with God on a daily basis.

  86. The artwork and the writings presented by this portion of Garden of Truth are JUST what I needed to hear this week. I have felt so unworthy of my blessings… I know in my heart that God loves me unconditionally, but I have struggled with letting that truth come to my mind. Thank you for posting at least this excerpt!

  87. As a Christian photographer I am always excited to see others who use their talent to further God’s kingdom. Beautiful artwork. I love it.

  93. “What we need is a truer view of our own weakness and a coming to the end of ourselves. God calls the end of our try-in-our-own-strength the beginning of His stand-back-and-watch-Me.” This hit my heart while reading because I know for sure that when I stopped trying in my own strength what I got to stand back and watch him do was amazing! And the beautiful part is he is still doing it!

On earth as it is in Heaven 💜

  96. Our God gives us so many beautiful flowers to enjoy and Ruth’s renderings are awesome. She has a true talent from the Lord.

  97. While reading this caught my eye
“God calls the end of our try-in-our-own-strength the beginning of His stand-back-and-watch-Me.” Only thing sometimes we don’t stand back and watch. We get selfish and stomp our foot like little children and say “I wanted it yesterday!” And this is when God corrects and discplines us! And He does because He loves us! What an awesome God He is!

  98. Thank you so much for sharing. This looks like a book that we should all have in our possession. I cannot think of a more beautiful and meaningful way to present the truth that God has spoken to each of us, if only we could all hear. #beblessed

  99. The few samples of Ruth’s art with scripture brought profound joy and hope to my heart. I love botanical art and that coupled with God’s Word is a treasure to desire. I hope to be one of the recipients of her generous offer.

  106. As an artist also, I admire and am constantly amazed at the vision God gives us in our surroundings. When I am riding my horse sometimes I just stop to inhale and take in the presence (presents) around me.
My art is expressed many ways but no matter the form I am inspired by my senses. God has giving me the ability to express them visually. So the visual arts soothe me. I would love a copy of this book by Ruth. Art speaks to the soul.

  107. Going thru trials and sufferings and knowing there is a purpose isn’t always easy. But that’s where faith comes in. We have to trust and praise the Lord daily. With simple reads and beautiful illustration like this book, it gives us a chance to pause and take in God’smessage to us.

  108. Yes my trials bring me to the garden of truth- the garden where I discover another blossoming weakness. 129. Even if I do not win, I will purchase. Not just this one, but both. All of these spoke deeply to me this morning, ..a speaking that will echo through my day. I’ve had very rough days recently, and facing many things. I find it difficult to even find the strength to go each day. I’m fighting physically and spiritually. Not just my battles, but those of my 21 year old daughter involved in an emotionally and mentally abusive relationship. Thank you for this and using a Gods talent He gave to bless others.

  130. Such a beautiful way to start the day! Things in Michigan are still quite “gray” here and it is truly uplifting to see the magnificent pictures of flowers God created and read His scripture at the same time. As stated so many times: “a picture is worth a thousand words”: The combination: DYNAMIC!

  131. This looks like a lovely book, beautiful, peaceful art with lovely but powerful words to delivered in the most gentle way. My favorite, “ you are sowing and growing each day through thoughts that inform your mind and direct your heart.” ONE TO PIN ON YOUR MIRROR, YOUR FRIDGE AND YOUR CUBICLE WALL AT WORK!
